John 14:15 states, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." This verse, spoken by Jesus to His disciples during His final discourse, profoundly connects genuine love for Christ with obedience to His divine directives. It is not a mere suggestion but a foundational principle of discipleship, revealing the true nature of a believer's relationship with God.
Jesus explicitly links love for Him with keeping His commandments. This is not a transactional relationship where obedience earns love, but rather a demonstration where love is proven through obedience. As the Apostle John reiterates in 1 John 5:3, "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." This highlights that God's commands are not burdensome to those who truly love Him, but rather a natural outflow of that affection. Mike Winger often emphasizes that true faith is always accompanied by works, not as a means of salvation, but as evidence of it. This verse underpins that evangelical truth.
Jesus does not leave His followers to obey in their own strength. Immediately following this statement, He promises the Holy Spirit: "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever" (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit empowers believers to understand God's will and provides the strength to live according to it. This divine assistance transforms obedience from a legalistic burden into a Spirit-empowered act of worship. "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14:26).
Obedience to Christ's commandments is not only a test of love but also a pathway to blessing and deeper fellowship with God. Jesus further explains, "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him" (John 14:21). This promise reveals a reciprocal relationship: as we obey out of love, the Father loves us, Christ loves us, and He reveals Himself more fully to us. This is the profound intimacy that obedience unlocks.
For you today, John 14:15 is a call to examine the authenticity of your love for Christ. It challenges you to move beyond mere intellectual assent or emotional sentiment to active, intentional obedience. Consider areas in your life where God's Word is clear but your actions diverge. True love for Jesus will compel you to align your life with His teachings, not out of fear of punishment, but out of a deep desire to please Him and honor His sacrifice. Lean on the Holy Spirit, whom Christ promised, to empower you in this endeavor. Your obedience is a testimony to the world and a pathway to deeper communion with God.
Let the words of Jesus strengthen your resolve: "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love" (John 15:10).
